  • Days of War

The past four days have started with a quick breakfast, possible shower and a teeth brushin’. Then, the day truly begins when Skyler steps out the door to greet his fellow soldiers. The boys next door, along with Sky, have turned our property and the adjacent into a war zone. They scream while wielding swords hewn from 2×4′s, proudly displaying old scraps of t-shirts tied tightly around their arms or heads to signify which team they’re on. An obstacle course was built to test the strength and stamina of the soldier. They would have to run from one side of the field to the other starting out by ducking under an over-turned goal, used for soccer, running to the play structure, climbing up the ropes and vaulting into the crow’s nest. The two girls, Selina and Corrina, are the nurses and are kept inside the fort for safe keeping. Last night, however, was the first time they played war while the sun was down. They started at 10pm and played until 11. Shouts and screams of “I shot you first! You’re dead! You’re dead!”, coursed through the dark air. I opened our back door and could hear little voices whispering beneath our porch and then suddenly three little shadows burst out screaming “Get them!”. Creeping around the night with little LED lights strapped to their heads and the element of suprise on their hands was a lot more fun than playing in the day time. Skyler informed me this morning, “David was right. It was so much more fun because all you could see were shadows because of the lights. I shot Michael and no one ever shot me!”. He grinned at me proudly. He came down from his bedroom this morning wearing his army clothes ready to start another war. I asked him if he slept in his clothes and he said that he hadn’t. That was a good sign…hah. They’re outside right now playing war again and have decided that they will play “Night War” again this evening but, this time it will start at 9pm and go until 11….oh my…
