  • MIY: Homemade All-purpose Cleaning Spray

My mom was the one who introduced me to this.  She used to own a house cleaning business and eventually, my younger sister and I took over, cleaning huge homes in the foothills of northern California.  When we first started using this cleaning spray it was with the regular, unscented alcohol, mixed with ammonia and diluted with water.  It had an incredibly strong smell and if we didn’t dilute the mixture enough we would choke ourselves out with the fumes.  Later, when the wintergreen alcohol came out, we made the switch and it was much more bearable.
I use this cleaner all over my house and have no need to ever buy commercial cleaning products again.

This will clean, and quite thoroughly:

    windows (with no streaking)

    kitchen counter tops (granite included)

    bathroom countertops

outside of the toilet (all the way down to the base)

    linoleum flooring

    light fixtures

    inside the fridge

My list could go on and on.  This is an eco-friendly and pocketbook friendly way to clean your house.

Mix 1/3 bottle of wintergreen alcohol and fill the rest of the spray bottle up with water.  That’s it!  If you choose, you can add about a 1/3 cup of ammonia for a deeper clean. (make sure the ammonia is non-sudsing)

Does it disinfect? I’m a bleach user, I like this idea but the most important thing to me above all is to make sure everything gets disinfected.

Absolutely!! I am a bleach user as well, but it’s not good AT ALL. It’s unhealthy, so I’m starting to use my bleach alternative mixture instead. I use the bleach mixture for my sinks and inside my toilets, and to scrub my tub. I’ll be posting a scouring powder soon, so be on the lookout for that. You can use the powder instead of the bleach alternative for those things too.

Oh I am so going to do this. I have never seen wintergreen alcohol but I shall search till I do!
I use a vinegar/water mix with a few drops of whichever essential oils I like. It works well but sometimes I worry about the disinfecting properties.

Love this idea can’t wait to try it. I love making my own cleaning supplies. I make my own detergent every month.

I, too, make my own detergent! It’s an amazing $$ saver. I have the recipe for so many home supplies here on my blog, including fabric softener.
