  • MIY: Dishwashing Detergent

My dishwashing soap has done me no favors.  Well, some, but not very well.  It’s so frustrating to have to literally hand wash every dish before you put it in.  It sort of defeats the purpose of a dish washing machine!  But, I did it because I figured, well, at least they’ll be sterilized.  Maybe I should have just left them to dry on my counter top to save money on all that hot water and steam piping around in there…

Since my dishwashing soap is nearing the end of its bottled life, I have made the switch to my own soap.  Once again, three ingredients (I’m in love!)

Not sure if the sea salt makes a difference, but it’s all I have so, I’m using it.

    1c. Baking Soda
    1c. Borax
    1/2c. Salt
Mix well and store in an airtight container
Use 1 TB per compartment in dishwasher.

You can also add some vinegar to one of the compartments for a little extra shine  :)

    Enjoy!

**this is NOT my recipe, once again, it was passed along to me by one of my lovely readers who enjoys finding frugal ways to live**

Will definitely be trying this when I’m finished with my current soap!! Do you notice a difference in how well it cleans?

CLeans like a dream! And Borax is slowly becoming my best friend, he shows up a lot in these homemaking recipes I have.

Misha, do you still have to SCRUB EVERY DISH? I, too, hate that!! I might have to try this one! Thanks so much for all your posts! I love reading your blog!!

You inspired me to the max! I made this last night. It works amazing!! My dishes this morning were clean and my glasses were nearly sparkling :) I also used your recipe for the laundry detergent. I substituted the fels-napther for zote! Smells awesome and cannot wait to use it. You have no idea I appreciate these cost saving posts :)

WOW! AWesomeee. So glad you jumped right on it! The recipes are so,so easy to make. Some women immediately discount them because they feel like it will *take too much time* but it saves in more ways than one! Enjoy, my dear :) ) More of these posts to come!

I have been researching diy dishwasher detergent. All say they start out wonderfully, but then within weeks fail. Are you still using yours? Is the recipe still the same?

Yes! I am still using mine. I haven’t bought dishwashing detergent since I put this post up. It works very well. I make sure to rinse my dishes before putting them in though. I know some people do not rinse their dishes at all, so I can’t speak for how well it will *clean* if there is a dish with caked on food or whatnot. But for me it’s been fabulous.
