  • Running: Setting Goals

    I tend to be a “goal setter”.  I enjoy having a plan and then slowly, sometimes too slowly, gain ground and achieve.  Last week I started a new feature on my FB page called M.O.M :: Mound Of Miles (which is a direct spin off of “Pile Of Miles” from Run Like A Mother: The Book.  I told you all that I’m not terribly original)  Each week, Monday to Monday, we will run, bike, walk, jog or swim as many miles as we can and then post it to share and inspire one another.  So, my grand total was 10.  Oh my!!  I was so disappointed because there was a time when I was putting in 20 miles no problem.  Where those days went and why they aren’t happening again…mystery to me.  Well, maybe not, D’s school schedule has a lot to do with it.  I’m slowly finding a rhythm though.

    But in those times where I’m out of sync, it’s so frustrating.  My “usual” running schedule is as follows.
    Mondays: Up for grabs. It’s just me and the baby so it means a stroller run
    Tuesdays: D’s day off from school so I can run solo
    Wednesdays: Repeat of Monday
    Thursday: Repeat of Tuesday
    Friday: Repeat of Monday
    Saturday: Dedicated to my long runs

    That’s how my week SHOULD go, but things happen and running is the first to be moved off the “most important things to do today” list.  And when I don’t get my run, after two days I literally feel myself growing a second rear end.  Not a good feeling, so naturally, my mood darkens and all I can think about is getting outside to pound the pavement.

    This week I’ve only managed a measly 7 miles, but that’s ok because tomorrow is Saturday and I will be running NO less than 5 miles, it will most likely be 7 or 8 and I will be satisfied.  Why?  Because last week I set a goal:: Run more than 10 miles the following week.  Oh!  Guess what?  I’ll be running more than 10 miles this week, so that means no second rear end and no dark thunder cloudy moods for me!
    Oh, yeah, I can totally live with that.
