I never imagined that I would get to see the falls other than in the books, my friend’s photos and in a documentary or something. But now, I can say that I’ve been there!!
It was D’s idea. He thought that since we were only about 2 hours away, as we were staying in Chautauqua, we should just tack it on to the last leg of our trip. So glad we did. Cylas was in awe. And Roma, well, she just danced around, because everything is so much interesting when you’re doing ballet moves.
I found out that the Falls isn’t just one big fall…there area couple (or more more? not sure). The two main ones are the American and then the Horseshoe. The Horseshoe is the famous one in all the pics of Niagara Falls. It’s pretty much mind boggling watching all that water rush past you and drop hundreds of feet down.
To get a feel for the falls we took a little self guided tour called “Cave Of The Winds”.
Not sure why they call it that, as we never went in a cave, we simply walked around on decks that took us right up to the cascade where the water would literally dump on you as the wind pushed it around.
For this tour you are given the yellow poncho and a set of the ugliest water sandals, ever. It’s funny. Me and D slipped ours on along with hundreds of of other tourists, so I didn’t feel too bad. Although, I would suggest that if you do go to the falls, just wear your own sandals! And the poncho makes you sweat. I was burning up and couldn’t wait to take it off. We got in an elevator that took us 175ft down, through solid rock, opened into a corridor and from there we just moseyed on through by ourselves. There are people standing by who can answer questions for you, if you have any, but we just took photos and gaped a lot.
It’s truly amazing how they have set up all these platforms so you can walk right up to all that water. It’s rushing and gushing around you the whole time and you wonder how everything stays standing. I didn’t want to think about it too much.
Cy and papa went up to the Hurricane Deck. That’s where you stand and get drenched from hundreds of gallons of water rushing over. They were hooting and hollering, so cute.
After our falls tour we went and had ice cream. I promise, my kids have the funniest *ugly* ice cream eating faces. hahah
We walked around a little more and stared out over the water.
I just loved this vacation. It was awesome. Start to finish. I felt relaxed and truly enjoyed myself. It was hard to head back. The kids were really sad because they loved having the beach so close while we were in Chautauqua.
Niagara Falls is a must with the family. The park is so nice and perfect if you wanted to bring a picnic. I wouldn’t suggest bringing a stroller on the Cave Of The Winds Tour, but most everywhere else is stroller friendly. We were going to do the Maid Of The Mist tour but were too tired…once we do that I’ll update on the stroller accessibility there.
Hopefully, we can find a way to make this happen again!
